Marios Wins

Just looked at the "IC/OOC Offense" thread on the Maelstrom Forum of Rule 7. I was going to respond to Marios but then it struck me that far from trying to engage in discussion he's only interested in winning. I give up, I don't have the patience to generate the amount of noise that he does and the thread is largely irrelevant anyway.

But then again, most of the threads on Rule 7 are irrelevant ... which begs the question, why bother at all?

On the bright side, I now know that the best way to get rid of him at events is to talk to him OOC ... I'll remember that.

In other news, I've mostly lost my voice ... which is weird because I don't recall shouting at the weekend and my voice felt fine on Sunday.

I don't argue with Marios either. All it achieves is aggravating me, which I believe is a deliberate debating tactic on his part. He's put more people off Rule7 / Pagga (to my knowledge) than any other poster I can think of.

Reason for Rule 7? - blind hope.

I got "warned" for requesting a user filter like wot Pagga dun had and specifically citing Marios as the need. That was almost a personal attack I was told. They have such low standards as to what can be said in order to personally attack things like Marios.

I actually read that thread and considered responding.

Then I remembered what my therapist said.

I concur wholeheartedly with your assessment, although I did once, I think, make him back off on a Pagga thread. Which took far more effort than it was worth.

As you say, most of the threads are pretty pointless. Look at the 13 pages of argument and opinion on the changes that PD haven't even made yet to retainers.

Add to that the large number of people who think that they have a divine right to instruct people on how they should have their fun and you have people with far too much time and not enough to do.

At least I know who Marios plays at Maelstrom, to give him his due he did at least walk the walk in the game so to speak. Shooting him dead was very therapeutic..... :)

Having actually spent a fair amount of time with Marios at Maelstrom (both IC and OC), I like the guy, his standard of roleplaying is very high, he his characters very well to the hilt and in my view makes it enjoyable for other players.
You just have to take everything he says on the internet with a pinch (or perhaps pitcher) of salt. I always get the impression he's trying to point out to people they might be taking the game a little seriously.

At least he knows that he's being annoying as opposed to the paggamonkeys who whine about Unstoppable powerblocks/how daggers should always call through/the lack of a pregnancy mechanic/ or being smug about fucking over someone else's event cus they didn't have a ritual site.
It's the people who seem to be genuinely serious that really get me.

I always get the impression he's trying to point out to people they might be taking the game a little seriously.

Which presupposes that taking the game seriously is a bad thing.

There's a clique on Rule7 who don't want to do that - that's cool; there's many ways to play the game.

But they (and Marios is their posterboy) wave the flag for one-true-wayism.

Just because they think that the game can't be played seriously doesn't mean it can't. And their attempts to hobble the game down to their own level of disability are ...

Oh, never mind. He's a pilchard.

That should have perhaps read "Too Seriously", alas I can't edit LJ posts.

As it happens, having actually spent time Marios IC and OC (which many of his critics seem not to) I have to say he is very good at being totally and to the hilt IC whilst playing, but treats it as a friendly game OC as opposed to certain players who seem to play to win.

[identity profile] jfs.livejournal.com 2006-09-12 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem is that your (for a value of 'your') definition of 'too seriously' is my definition of 'just seriously enough'.

Which is to say that Marios, Carrie and a number of other people on Rule7 have defined very clearly what they consider to be 'unacceptable' and are happy to define all other styles of play as being beyond the pale.

Fuck them, and the horse that they rode in on.

Sorry, I haven't a clue what you're talking about.

When I mention "Taking the game too seriously" I mean getting needlessly upset OC about IC issues, rules and downtimes as opposed to just enjoying the immersion and fun of in-depth roleplaying.

(Sorry for spaming your LJ 'Bin)

[identity profile] jfs.livejournal.com 2006-09-14 02:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry - didn't get mailed your response, so I've only just seen this.

The problem is that Marios and Carrie both define 'needlessly' as 'at all'. If you have any other reaction to (for example) character death than 'Cool - a chance to play something entirely new' they are unforgiving and have made it clear on many occasions on Rule7 and Pagga that you are wrong to do so.

That's their opinion. It is not an unchangable law of the universe.

I completely accept that he plays the game to the hilt IC.

However I find his "debating" style inconsistent with my own standards of productive discussion.

There are several issues with which I find his (and his crony Tart's) opinions and assertions positively objectionable.

He is not a person I would choose to roleplay, or (come to think of it) share the same planet, with.

Having said all that, I absolutely respect your right to like him.

Well it's useful to know that if I ever decide to lick you I should think twice.

Well, not so much useful as interesting. Actually not even that.

What a waste of space that man is.

I hope that Marios' phys-rep doesn't attend the Gathering, sounds like the sort of person I would want to avoid like a dose of amoebic dysentery.

[identity profile] jojo-jojo.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
He did - as one of the Doom Monks in the Vipers. I didn't hear a peep out of him all weekend, and rather surprisingly didn't receive any abuse about the LT and the way I run the Vipers on the LT forum in Rule7 afterwards (I was expecting to have to ride the wave of insults and moans).

Sounds a bit like the "Roy" of legend.

Hes one of the Doom monks?

How weird...

Arse I loved the Doom monks.

I wanted to keep them.

I too almost responded to him and then realised that I lost interest in what he had to say a very long time ago. The board may not have an igore list filter, but in Marios's case my brain has long since adapted to filtering almost everything he posts out anyway. It's a shame really; I'm sure he occasionally has something worthwhile to say, but he's created such antipathy with his 'debating' style that very few people care.

[identity profile] curlwomble.livejournal.com 2006-09-13 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
I read his first few posts to see what the noise was about and he started off making some pretty valid points about the nature of IC insults in LARP and Maelstrom in particular. I can see why Bin didn't want to bother arguing when Marios fronted up to him though.
