Happy Birthday to you ...
Nov. 16th, 2003 01:59 amIt is now, officially, the Fox's birthday and to that end I have sent him to bed whilst I "do some stuff on the PC". In fact, gentle reader, what I'm going to do is wait until I'm pretty sure he's asleep and then sneak out to get his birthday prezzie part 1 from the car. Thanks to the postal strike, birthday prezzie part 2 is still winging its way to my house ... at least I hope it is. I feel a bit of a fraud actually, since prezzie #1 is more for me than for the Fox (him having an aversion to clocks and all) but I hope he'll like it all the same. For the curious amongst you, it's a self-correcting napoleon clock for the mantlepiece .. having a timepiece that's actually visible without having trained in gymnastics for ten years will be something of a novelty to the Fox but I hope he'll get used to it.
We watched 'You Only Live Twice' this evening and I was struck by how authentically Japanese it is, certainly there are bits of kitsch but on the whole it seems far more faithful to Japanese culture (albeit selectively) than many other, more modern, films. As far as I'm aware it is also the first Western film to feature 'ninjas' and I suspect it has an awful lot to answer for in that regard, given te utter dross that came after. There is one rather wonderful Iaijutsu kata demonstration followed by its practical application later in the movie which I thought was particularly fine.
Looking forward, hopefully I will be going to see
s0b and J next weekend. The Fox has come out in a sudden and acute state of bashfulness which means that, sadly, he will probably not be accompanying me ... which saddens me a little but I understand his feelings so I'll try not to get too down about it. New Year is causing me a little more consternation as I am really quite desperate to be in two places at once! B-Movie, obviously, is the place to be on 31 December ... but I would aslo love to see the New Year in with the Fox down here. Ah well, I shall doubtless make my mind up in due course.
Now, I shall go see if anything has been added to the Maelstrom board on Pagga before braving the elements to get a certain package from the car. Salut maintenant chér reader.

Date: 2003-11-16 07:58 am (UTC)Shall try later - but next Saturday = Good. Do tell your young man to pull himself together and for goodness sake come for dinner, (I find it extremely pleasing to believe that anyone considers the prospect of meeting us intimidating, but, at the same time, I think I'd rather be slightly lovely than a scary b*stard).
That is all
