While performing a search for an LRP-related word I came across this story. If ind it impossible to have either compassion or respect for the sort of community that would condone such things.

It is because of views similiar to this that means that our local hospital won't tell you the gender of your child prior to birth. Apparently ceratin cultures detest girl children so much that they beat their wife to try and cause a miscarriage.

Even typing this sickens me.

I get very angry when people try to tell me that feminism isn't needed any more. Yeah, it's (sort of) fine and dandy being a white middle class western woman.

But more than that, I don't know how love can flourish in the face of such crippling obstacles, and what are we without love?

I couldn't get to the URL specified but I can guess at the sort of story it detailed. 'West Wing' made some interesting points in their episode 'The women of Qumar' - The hypocrisy of 'enlightened' western nations getting into bed with countries where the sort of social practises that should have died with the Black Death still go on.

No, I have no compassion for such a culture either. Reading this just turns me into Kurtz. It's a good thing I don't have a say on who gets bulldozed and who doesn't.

We should not trade with them until they change, and we should put pressure on those who do, and who crave our markets, to do likewise, all the time ensuring that similar prejudices continue to be eroded from our own culture.

No wonder the North West Frontier (mountainous Pakistan and Afghnistan) is a mess. Deliberate gender imbalance leaving large numbers of men with nothing to do when they're not eking a living except tie themselves in knots about 'Honour'.

And people think this is because of Islam. :-(

Nice a culture and faith that is above the law and human rights. Treats women worse than dirt, and even those that are "honourable" cannot believe they can succesfully bring up a girl within that code.

This is a sickening abuse of human rights and needs to be crushed as mercellesly as they treat their own kin.
