Maelstrom Venting

Fucking downtime! I'm fed up to the back teeth with it.

I'm going to give it a few weeks but at the moment the whole co-operative downtime thing (which has to be done in order to gain new Priest skills) is getting me so down that I'm thinking of packing in Jagular and just playing a bland character so I can hang out with my chums.

It's entirely possible that I'll get over this particular burst of disgruntlement but it's an infuriating system that never fails to get me into a boiling rage at some point. Come back Omega downtimes, all is forgiven!

Sympathy

Hi Bin,

I have some sympathy as co-operative military actions are just the same. May I suggest that if the problem that you have are players, phone is far more effective than email.

If the problem is system orientated, get the player id's of those involved and then email or phone PD directly outlining what you are trying to achieve and the problems that you are experiencing. I have found them extremely helpful in the past.

There's nothing to be done about this downtime and no-one to blame. It's just that the design of the thing is such that skill progression is ... problematic ... especially, it seems, for priests.

Matt is, as ever, being splendid about the whole thing. I swear that if all event organisers had his ethic1 the hobby would evolve beyond all recognition.

Unfortunately, for someone who dislikes co-operative downtimes, I have managed to select the one profession for whom it is mandatory. *sigh*

1 Ethic with regard to the actual running of events and attitude to people as opposed to his deranged ideas about events being player-led. =)

i for one have a massive issue with running multiple gambling dens by finding enough pc's to run them and then have one massive conference call so that we can all create our DT's together in order. If we get one single step wrong the whole house of cards collapses and we ALL have to start again. Then assuming you do it all right you find that I get the costs some other pc gets the moeny and i do not even get a report on the house profits. Now not only do I not know what has been earned I cannot pay rent as it is % based and I am blacklisted because the debts on profitable (barely)assetts.

Grrrr.

I do however agree Matt is willing to help wherever possible. It is old adage give a little and we all just see the problems. "ironic" better to be like LT and give bugger all for a decade!!

Warning : PeeDee Drone Here

Co-operative downtimes are evil beyond belief. I am in favour of them but I wish there was a better way of sorting them out.

I have a love-hate relationship with the Downtime system, from my time as Anaguma Tanaka and beyond. It *should* be helping people do cool stuff without forcing Pennington to read 3,000 multi-page downtime submissions that make no sense. It is *actually* fucking peoples games up completely instead.

I can say that it is probably worth e-mailing PeeDee about the problem. They want your money to make you happy. I for one would not like to see one of the people who "gets" the Faith game drop his character because of electronic idiocy.

I had, in fact, already emailed PeeDee before writing this rant and I have sufficient faith in Matt and the team that if things don't change then there's probably a bloody good reason for it.

For myself, I think that gaining Priest skills should be between the priest and their deity (ie. I spend 90 days in meditation and prayer at the end of which time the Merchant sends an Eidolon to give me instant inspiration), why a one should be forced to negotiate with other priests (of any faith!) or a random Eidolon is beyond me as it seems to be going in the wrong direction if you see what I mean ... can't say more because of FOIP.

So - the priest chooses the action "Meditate" and hopes for the best. The Eidolons take the "Enlighten" action but they don't pick a specific person to enlighten. They declare their willingness to enlighten someone. Only as many priests as there are Eidolons choosing the "Enlighten" action can actually gain new skills.

nah

again deity gives the eidolon the inspire as a result of the meditation. He then gets to pass it on to the priest in a I am here to bless you child bit of roleplay.

sounds good

I concur.

Meditiation - long periods of tedious silence - happens in downtime.

Englightenment - potentially interesting roleplay - happens at events. Maybe not the next event, but one day...

(I've retired, you know...)

That would rock ... and would give the Eidolons a bit more kudos, let's face it, they need it.

How about letting Eidolons inspiring any devotees during their downtime to improve what they're doing? They could be like a portable blessing ... that would make them really sought after ... and would make devotion a more tempting prospect ... which would, in turn, mean us priests get to Excommunicate power-gaming twats!

That last alone is worth the price of admission to me.

not negative, just poking holes ...

Main issue I can think of is Eidolons who fail to deliver the blessing of enlightenment, or give it to the wrong person, as is their wont.

Still, not necessarily a showstopper, I'm sure we could work something out. Am a bit leary of the return to the Omega world of "I spent 3 months in downtime doing this and don't get the result til the 3rd day of the event" potential problem too, but again, not something that can't be worked around.
