So I awoke this morning having had a most peculiar dream, which I shall recount for you now.

Somewhat curiously, I found myself in the middle of some unknown city, digging at the bottom of a trench1 in an archeological stylee. I found two items, one a tiny piece of twig, with the bark sloughing off it, the other a larger twig with some vivid green grass-like growths on it; these were unique and precious items. Rather proud of my discovery2 I called over my colleagues, one of whom was the actor Tony Doyle. Having climbed out of the trench, I was startled by a bright flash in the sky, the origin of which was obscured by skyscrapers. Making my way round the intervening buildings to get a clearer look, I noticed a huge, and rapidly growing, cloud glowing from beneath and within itself. A moment later there was an almighty boom which was possibly the loudest sound I have ever heard. Having done a fairly swift calculation, I reasoned that I was in no way at a safe distance and that the remainder of my life was now measured in seconds ... and probably not very many of them. As if on cue, a curtain of light and fire came drifting out from the base of the explosion, dwarfed by the cloud but still higher than the tallest of the buildings around me. Somewhat curiously, as the curtain of light billowed toward me at what seemed a leisurely pace but was clearly very fast indeed, my final thoughts were "I love you" ... perhaps more curiously, this sentiment wasn't directed at anything or anyone in particular, it was simply an expression of love for all of creation.

And then I died.

And then I woke up.

I can only hope that I meet my actual death with as much equanimity and compassion. Sadly, I suspect that I shan't.

1 Though the trench was rather more the size, shape and depth of a grave, and was lined compeltely with wood.
2 Curiously in pristine states of cleanliness and apparently having no connection at all with the dark clay through which I had been scraping.
