Have you read Designing with Web Standards by Jeffrey Zeldman. It's got a lot of advice for doing CSS and standards compliant HTML 'in the trenchs' and now that I think about this it has a whole section on that particular problem [/barndoorclosed]. he was my first web guru when I started learning and he aint let me down yet :).
