It Lives!

So I've stripped out an appalling amount of stuff from my WoW drive and have now managed to download the recent patch. I know this is only a temporary solution and I have no idea how playable the game is going to be in its current state ... but it's a minor victory I think. This is it though, there just isn't any space to fit anything else in so the writing is most definitely on the wall.

Just how much machine does this damn game consume (other than 'all of it'" ) ?

I have it on its own 20Gb drive ... nothing else, just WoW.

I had downloaded the patch without problems, but when I tried to run it, the program told me I needed 6.5GB to run the install.

I managed to clear 6.5GB, started the install running, and this time it looked OK, so I went to bed leaving it running.

This morning I came down to my computer to find that the install had failed as it had run out of space. Nothing else had been running against that drive.

I managed to make more space by moving stacks of old patch files to another drive. I now showed as having almost 8GB free.

So, I started again, and left the install running as I set off for work. Fingers crossed, when I get home tonight, I'll have a runnable WoW and stacks of spare space.

After the install is done, you can take out the patch folders and burn them to a DVD for safekeeping, freeing up a couple of gig.

When I was clearing up my drive in advance a few days ago, I found that old large patches (like 1.8-2.0!) were still hidden away in folders, unused taking up space.

This is how I made enough space (well, to another drive, not a DVD).

Heh, I have WoW installed on its very own drive ... so no, no room for another. Buying a larger hard drive is something of a false economy as the game is starting to exceed the processing power of my PC. Anyway, as I said in my later post, I finally got the damn thing installed so I get to continue playing it for a little longer.
